Tailor’s tape measure, tailor’s tape measures
Decided. I’m going to sew! The decision’s made – so what next? You’re browsing sewing blogs, collecting Burda patterns and dreaming of gathered dresses. All in good time. The more you try, the better your work will go, and sewing itself will become easier and more enjoyable. To start with, begin with simple things. Assuming that as a child you sewed little trousers and jumpers for your teddy bears and skirts for your dolls, you’ve already taken your first steps. Now it’s time to put together the basic equipment and choose your fabrics. The foundation is a tailor’s tape measure… good scissors, a sewing machine and enthusiasm for the work, and of course good fabric. Good meaning what kind? The kind that won’t get ruined after the first wash and will feed well through the machine, i.e. won’t wrinkle while you’re sewing. A well‑chosen fabric will make the dress or jacket you sew drape beautifully. It’s worth thinking carefully about your choice of fabric and haberdashery. A tape measure, eyelets, studs, buttons or patches are easy to change, but changing the colour of the fabric is harder and more expensive. Once the fabric and accessories are chosen, it’s time for the pattern. You more or less know that the fabric you bought is meant to become a summer dress, but you’re still not sure whether it should have short sleeves or straps. This is the last moment for a change, because although you can alter the style even after sewing, drastic changes are either very difficult or unrealistic. And now it’s time to get to work, so that after the hours spent on patterns and at the machine, you can enjoy your new garment. Such a dress definitely has the advantage of being completely different from high‑street clothes.
