The thread is made from staple fibres of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). These are water‑soluble threads used instead of standard threads for temporary seams and basting. They can be used to temporarily sew in zips, hems, position pockets and appliqués, and then removed with water or a steam iron without any residue or stains.
Standard threads used for temporary seams are unpicked. In contrast, these threads are removed with water, which reduces working time and prevents holes from forming in the fabric.
